Change

The Bulgarian currency is the lev (plural: leva), the symbol is BGN.

It was revalued in 1999. 1.000 old leva = 1 new lev. The old lev is no longer valid!

The new bills are of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 leva and all have a security band to the left (see photo).

The lev is tied to the euro, € 1 = 1,955 BGN.
The US dollar is about 1.45 leva.

Currency can be changed in any bank or change bureau.
The exchange rate in hotels is not very good.
In Bulgaria almost everything (if not everything) is paid cash.
IN some big hotels and tourist centres international credit cards are accepted.
There are ATMs at the subsidiaries of Bulbank, OBB and others where you can withdraw money with VISA, MasterCard, Plus, etc.
